Unusual: Herpes simplex is usually seen on the surface of mucous membranes or surrounding tissue. It produces "cold sores" and genital lesions. What i suspect is that you may be seeing herpes zoster on the abdominal wall or back. Usually this will be confined to one side and affect only the area of skin served by one nerve root. This is the virus that causes chickenpox & reactivates to shingles later.
