HSV testing: Igm is the first antibody type to be produced in an immune reaction to a foreign invader such as a virus. Over time, the igm response changes to igg. Some tests will examine igm to determine if the infection is new (recent), some tests look at igg to see if there is evidence of an older infection or exposure. The physician selects the appropriate test depending upon the question they need answered.
