They are called sexually transmitted for a reason. There are myths about acquiring them from toilet seats or other agents but with rare exception the germs die on exposed surfaces. I suppose if you were sharing a sex toy immediately with someone the infected material could transfer, but I would argue that is still transferred in a sex act.
