A member asked:

Im confused by answers on previous questions; if the chlamydia caused pid, does it mean that 7 days of doxycycline would have been enough to cure pid? why do several sources recommend 14 days of doxy in combination with other drug to cure pid?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

PID is an infection that has traveled from the cervix through the uterus into the Fallopian tubes. It is usually caused by multiple organisms, and is therefore best treated with multiple antibiotics that cover the chlamydia that was detected by test, plus other potential organisms (like anaerobes). The treatment should last longer than for a chlamydial infection that is only present in the cervix.
