Irregular bleeding can be caused by many things: stress, weight gain/loss, new exercise regimen, lack of sleep, contraceptives, hormonal disruption, uterine fibroids/ endometriosis/ adenomyosis, ovarian problems. Typically the irregularities last only one or two cycles. If they continue or if the bleeding becomes very heavy, contact your Dr. take a pregnancy test to rule out pregnancy.

Extended and intermittant bleeding can indicate pregnancy outside the uterus (ectopic) , so obtain a serum HCG test, and if positive, see your gyn physician as soon as possible, as this needs immediate attention.
