A member asked:

Got treated for non-std bacterial infection in vagina. how did the bacteria get inside and how to prevent this from happening in the future? does sex also cause it? trying to avoid pid. thank you in advance doctors. much appreciated?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Bacteria live there: The vagina is host to a large number of bacteria normally and the vaginal pH(acidity/alkalinity scale) keeps the "good" bacteria comfortable at home and the "bad" bacteria from overwhelming the 'house" Frequent intercourse, douching, irritating fragrant soaps, & STD's all can alter the vaginal environment creating bacterial infections.
