Probably normal: True constipation in a newborn is not common. An baby feeding breast milk/formula should have soft or liquidy brown/yellow BM's. If you notice hard, clay like stool or pellet-like stool then you should take your infant to the pediatrician. Otherwise, stools may be produced once daily or every other day. Don't give additional water. The crying may be due to gas. Try burping him more frequently.

SOME BASICS: A newborn has no concept of what of many noises they can make will concern you. They also have flabby soft belly muscles, poop while laying flat & must use their fussing/breathing muscles to help them poop. Using fussing muscles makes the belly pooch out & hard.I consider all of these things rather normal.
