Tar odor: The odor is nonspecific, but if the feces looks like tar, one would be concerned about occult bleeding in the upper gastrointestinal tract, use of peptobismol, or taking iron supplements. A simple rectal examination with inspection of a small stool specimen and a simple test of the specimen in the office would shed light on your concern and rule out blood in the stool.
