A member asked:

I got the skyla iud. i'm not worried about stds.. are condoms necessary while using the iud or can i stop using them?

No: No. Although the IUD will be very protective against pregnancy, there is still a failure rate of 3%. When it fails, ectopic(tubal) pregnancy is often the result with sometimes dire consequences. Moreover, IUD strings have been known to conduct bacteria up the string into the intrauterine space & Fallopian tubes causing chronic salpingitis (PID) which can cause sterility.

Skyla IUD: The Skyla IUD is 99% effective in preventing pregnancy. It does not protect against STD transmission. Use condoms if you do not know your partner's STD status.
