Yes, if : The organisms, such as neisseria or chlamydia, is sensitive to this antibiotic. If it is not treated properly, you can get scarring and urethral strictures, which can become big problems.

Not effective: Cefuroxime might be effective if you have gonorrhea, but gonorrhea is the least common cause of urethriits. (And although cefuroxime might work, it's not the best and not recommended for gonorrhea treatment.) Most urethritis is chlamydial or nongonococcal urethritis (NGU), and cefuroxime doesn't work for either one. NGU should be treated with doxycycline or azithromycin. Also treat sex partner(s).
