"Permanent" markers: The common Sharpie marker is "permanent". The ink stains the skin cells. The marked cells fall off over time, as all skin cells fall off when new cells rise up from underneath. It is hard to wash Sharpie drawings off with soap... which means a scrubbing harshly will rip off skin cells and cause a minor wound that may scab while healing. If it doesn't heal quickly, a person should see his doctor.

Treat gently: The area will heal. Next time avoid Sharpies altogether, or wait for the marks to fade on their own. Organic solvents will remove Sharpie but I would not recommend applying them now.
