NAAT vs DNA probe: I'm not familiar with the term "direct"; maybe you mean nucleic acid amplifciation tests (NAATs). There is also a DNA probe test. NAATs are generally better, but more expensive. Both can miss some infections, but the probe test misses more (i.e. false negative results). Still, either one picks up more than 90% of infections. A negative result usually is accurate.
