Short cervix: Vaginal progesterone is commonly prescribed for patients with cervical incompetence or a short cervix in pregnancy. There are compounding pharmacies that make vaginal suppositories, but it is common to just use prometrium (micronized progesterone) tablets placed vaginally. This helps support the cervix in hopes to prevent preterm delivery.

Progesterone: Assuming that you are taking progesterone (PG) for fertility treatment, it is definitely better absorbed vaginally than orally. The capsules melt from your body heat and the PG is directly absorbed into the mucous membranes and blood supply in the vagina. The oral route is metabolized by your GI tract (stomach, liver, intestines) before it becomes biologically "active".
