Dr. Anne Hale answered

If ordered: With the new paps that are done in liquid media, we can ordrer std cultures, but they are not routinely done. You can request them or they should be offered to you when you have your pap and pelvic exam.

Not all: A paps smear is specifically looking at the cells in the mucosa of the cervix. At the same time swabs and sampling a can b taken to look for stds and when the paps smear is being done it is often combined with a pelvic exam. During this exam the md should b able to notice any suspicious looking ulcerationa or lesions or infections and decide if further tests need to b done to look for stds.
