Hello. : Hello. Black, sticky, smelly bowel movements can be caused melena which is due to gastrointestinal bleeding. Hard balls of stool can be due to constipation and can mean that there is not suffiecient fiber or liquid intake as well as insufficient exercise. Some medications like peptobismal can also give you black bowel movements. Based on the info provided you can decide whether or not you should be evaluated.
