Herpes virus: The herpes virus causes cold sores and outbreaks often happen during times of stress to you body, like your period. You can prevent them by trying to get good rest and avoiding stress. Talk to your doc to have some medicine, usually valacyclovir, on hand and begin taking it as soon as you feel the first sign it's coming. It will help shorten the length and severity of an outbreak.
