You need pap first: Your gynecologist can order a pap smear that has the option for sero-typing hpv. There are over 50 serotypes so your doctor can order the high-risk serotypes: (16, 18, 31, 33, etc.).

Ask your OBGYN...: I believe you are referring to the hybrid capture hpv test. As you mention, it only tests for high risk hpv strains (the strains that have been most associated with cervical cancer). It does not test for the myriad of low risk hpv strains that are considerably less associated with cervical cancer. Your obgyn should know whether his/her referral lab uses this test.
