Viral isolation: None of the serologic tests will convincingly differentiate between herpes types 1 & 2 infections. The only way to definitively do this is to isolate the virus and test it for type.

Herpes 1 and 2: the majority of Genital Herpes is Type 2 however about a third of genital herpes is t ype 1 wich usually occurs on the face and is know as a 'cold sore' they are close cousins! Besides using a condom to prevent spread of genital herpes, there are a number of antriviral medications that decrease spread and can shorten an outbreak. See your physician for a prescription

NO: One does not morph into the other. But genital herpes can move to normal location of cold sores ; vice versa.

No: Herpes type 1 and type 2 are different viruses. They don't mutate into one another. A person can get both types. Either or both types can occur on the genitals or orally. For example, if a person has both types orally, sometimes a lip sore will be type 1 and other times it will be type 2.
