Not necessarily: If the ulcers are on the "in" side of your lip and not on the out side of the lip, then you may have a common canker sore or aphthous ulcer. These can happen if you accidentally bite your lip and some viruses can cause this also. If you want to rule out herpes, see your doctor to test for it.

Not always: Ulcers inside the mouth may not be herpetic. If the ulcer is on the border between the lip and skin it is more likely to be herpes. Thanks for trusting HealthTap!
