A member asked:

Is low shbg in males independent of low testosterone? can both low shbg and low testosterone derive from the same underlying cause?

Sex Hormone Binding: Globulin (SHBG) is a protein derived from the liver. Having a medical condition that causes low SHBG can decrease a patient's Total Testosterone level, but their Free Testosterone (Biologically Active) should remain normal. Patients can have an illness that causes low SHBG that also makes them ill enough to cause decreased Testosterone production. Any illness can decrease LH and Testosterone.
