IUD: Yes, you can still get a STD.

IUDs *only* prevent pregnancies. They in no way protect you from sexually transmitted diseases. Big difference.

Which opening? : Are you talking about the internal or external cervical os? f you just feel the string, you are OK. If you feel more than the string, the IUD is malpositioned. You should not feel the hub at the external os ("opening"). It is no longer trustworthy, and may require removal/replacement. Use another form of birth control until otherwise instructed by your healthcare provider.

Yes: An IUD does not prevent STIs. They are for birth control only. Have your partner use a condom to help reduce risk of STIs.

Good idea: If you have this concern always have the IUD checked so that you are assured that it is in the proper place inside the uterus.

IUD insertion: will it hurt less since my cervix was dilated when I had a medical abortion last year? Or is it still gonna hurt really bad?
Dr. Wayne Ingram

Hopefully, hurt less: Since your cervix has already been opened, a gentle MD examiner/IUD inserter should make it cramp less.

Rare: It is possible but rare for the IUD to come out. If you are concerned, have your GYN examine you and make sure that everything is ok.
