IUDs *only* prevent pregnancies. They in no way protect you from sexually transmitted diseases. Big difference.

Which opening? : Are you talking about the internal or external cervical os? f you just feel the string, you are OK. If you feel more than the string, the IUD is malpositioned. You should not feel the hub at the external os ("opening"). It is no longer trustworthy, and may require removal/replacement. Use another form of birth control until otherwise instructed by your healthcare provider.

Yes: An IUD does not prevent STIs. They are for birth control only. Have your partner use a condom to help reduce risk of STIs.
