A 21-year-old female asked:

what are other ways other than taking bcp that will shrink a ovarian cyst or make go away. how long does a cyst usually take to disappear? ttc

Spontaneous resolve: Most ovarian cysts at your age (21 years old) are functional ovarian cysts and will resolve spontaneously. BCP will not make a cyst go away that is already present, but will prevent most functional ovarian cysts from occurring. These cysts usually resolve over 4-6 weeks.

Can benign breast cysts become cancerous?

Dr. Barry Rosen

No.: Cysts are a common condition, especially in women 35-50. The biggest problem with cysts is that it is impossible to differentiate them from tumors by physical examination or mammography; ultrasound or needle aspiration is necessary. Very rarely, breast cancers grow so fast that the center of the tumor can become liquified and resemble a cyst; either of these techniques should determine this.

Very unlikely: Rarely, people with failure of a gland will spontaneously recover function. Otherwise you would hormonal treatment and an invitro fertilized egg implanted and continued hormonal treatment during the pregnancy.

Sometimes, in the early evolution of POF, the ovary can still be stimulated with HIGH dose FSH, which can lead to pregnancy. You want to be doing the optimal treatment method for pregnancy to ensue if either of these occur. That optimal treatment method is IVF because it performs 7 of the 9 steps required to get pregnant and has the highest chances of pregnancy. As long as your ovaries stimulate and eggs can be obtained (you only need one or two good quality embryos), you would have a 50-70% chance of pregnancy per IVF cycle.

Dr. Bac Nguyen

Just ovarian cysts: Every woman of reproductive age forms cysts during her cycles--the process of ovulation forms cysts. Often these resolve/shrink, but unfortunately some don't and may enlarge resulting the "ovarian cyst" many have them and may not have symptoms. Some people have large ones and may cause pain. Some twist on themselves and cause torsion. If you concerns, consult doc. Good luck.

Kinda: If you have little to no estrogen from your ovaries you should not bleed at all. But if you have some in your diet or are overweight you may have bleeding so talk to your obgyn or endocrinologist.
