Depends on situation: If fresh blisters/sores, best is PCR test for the virus, or culture if PCR not available. If no current symptoms/outbreak, a type-specific immunoglobulin G (IgG) blood test. From either, it's crucial to learn HSV type, since genital HSV1 is very different than HSV2. Never request or accept an HSV IgM test (see comment to follow). Each STD must be tested separately; there is no single test.
