Complications: Teen pregnancies are at higher risk of complications such as pre-eclampsia and low birth weight babies. 25% of teen moms have another baby within 2 years of having their first. They are also at risk of post-partum depression and studies have shown they are more frequently victims of domestic violence.

When adolescents and adults are scheduled for their routine tetanus and diphtheria booster, should they get vaccinated with td or tdap?

Tdap, Usually: Unless there is a specific reason not to vaccinate against pertussis (whooping cough) such as a previous allergic reaction, tdap is preferred. Currently, people 65 and older can receive a dose of tdap, with boosters of td every 10 years.

Is teaching strictly about abstinence a successful way to control STDs in teens?

Dr. Edward Neilsen

My opinion...no: This is a hotly debated topic but generally i feel that the answer is no. I tell my patients that my job is not to preach my morals, but instead provide information to keep them healthy. There is no 100% safe sex, but i would prefer my patients who choose to become sexually active be armed with all information possible - including the fact that not even condoms are 100%!

Teen sexual health causes problems. Why don't they teach abstinence?

3 doctor answers7 doctors weighed in
Dr. Martin Raff
Infectious Disease 56 years experience
They do: In many places, abstinence is taught aggressively. Unfortunately that is often ineffective since our sex drive is one of the most powerful forces in our existence. Like any other aspect of life, education into techniques, benefits, risks, psychological and physical aspects of relationships, variations in preferences, etc., seem an essential part of understanding human sexuality.
