Herpes: Genital herpes is a chronic sexually transmitted infection caused by the herpes simplex virus (hsv). Historically, hsv-2 accounted for a majority of genital infections; however, hsv-1, which usually infects the orolabial area, now accounts for up to 50% of first-episode cases. These are often multiple, resulting in shallow, painful ulcers that may merge. The symptoms last for approximately 7-14 d.
