Iron supplements: The important thing is to test for blood in the stool or check for anemia which would imply that you are losing blood. Otherwise the color of the stool shouldn't worry you. In my experience, iron supplements are the most common cause of black stools without blood.

Likely melena: What you describe definitely sounds like melena. If so that means the blood is coming from the upper GI tract. That can be serious and should not be ignored. A stool test for blood will easily tell you the answer, and a complete blood count will give a good indication of how much blood has been lost. Get in to see a doctor as soon as you can.
