Menstrual spotting: Dark red blood is blood that is bleeding more slowly from the uterus. It has time to combine with oxygen which darkens the color, and sometimes clots. Early spotting is usually normal, and represents the beginning of a cycle, the sluffing off of the uterine lining at a slower rate than mid-cycle where the blood is bright red in color.
