Could be both, or it: could be expectations vs. reality. If your child spends more than an hour/day performing repetitive, non-functional rituals, that is atypical behavior. A child with academic, behavior &/or peer interaction problems that cause him harm needs evaluation & treatment, including family therapy. Though not intentional, parental frustration can harm a child's ability to develop a positive sense of self.
