Will usually go away: A stiff neck when waking up in the morning is usually because your head and neck where in an awkward position for several hours while you were sleeping but not painful enough to wake you up. It is can cause some strain of the muscles that attach to your spine or can cause some compression of the joints of the spine. In the vast majority of cases it will go away without any treatment. Heat helps.
