A member asked:

I ask this w/all seriousness! why do surgeons say that a disc isn't bad enough for surgery? why not fix it before the pain is life consuming ?

Back Pain = No Surg: There are many studies that show that surgery (fusion) is not effective for back pain. Microdiscectomy for a disc herniation causing weakness in a leg is sometimes indicated, but if pain is the only problem, there are frequently other treatments which work better than surgery. Failing these treatment may leave surgery as the only option but until then, it is really best interest not to operate.
