Unknown cause: Geographic tongue, also known as benign migratory glossitis, is an inflammatory condition of the mucous membrane of the tongue. The cause is unknown, but the condition is entirely benign. When a burning feeling is present, topical anesthetics can be used to provide temporary relief.

Different: The cause of geographic tongue is unknown. It is not related to allergies. Don't worry about this. It will change appearance during your life and may even go away for awhile. A allergy will be a redder, swollen tongue that can burn or itch. If you think you have an allergy stop eating it and get checked out.

Geographic Tongue: The red patches one has with geographic tongue are thin and raw, and they tend to be painful when eating acidic things like citrus fruit or spicy foods. However these neither make the condition worse nor cause them and you will soon come to notice which particular foods make the condition more uncomfortable or sore. Allergies to food might make them more painful or more noticeable.
