QTc prolongation: Hypomagnesemia can have different effects on the ekg, but the classic effect is prolongation of the qtc--i.e., slowing of the repolarization or electrical "resetting" of the heart between each beat. This prolongation can potentiate dangerous arrhythmias, including torsade de pointes. Low mag levels may also cause pr prolongation, widening of the qrs complex or flattening of the t waves.
