Symptomatic only: No medications on the personality structure per se. Medications are used to treat concurrent symptoms such as ptsd, psychosis, panic, generalized anxiety, and nightmares or flashbacks. There are no medications approved for the treatment of this condition. The treatment has varied through the years in terms of psychotherapy and currently dialectical behavioral therapy appears to be the most effective, but with the variety of symptoms, the therapy should ultimately be an eclectic therapy.

DBT: Dialectical behavior therapy, or dbt, has proven highly effective for individuals with bpd. Medication to manage the moods is a great/sometimes necessary adjunct. Medications given are usually antipsychotics or mood stabilizers depending on the particular cluster of symptoms. Medication will not "cure" the disorder, but will help manage some of the direct symptoms (depression, dissociation, etc).
