A member asked:

Mastocytosis has specific diagnostic criterion. does mast cell activation syndrome have specific criterion? if so, what is the criterion?

Mast cells: These are several diseases with ill defined criteria that do not constitute enough evidence to call them mastocytosis but may be a prerequisite for it.

Yes, see below: Mcas is diagnosed by: 1) symptoms of mast cell mediator release, 2) decrease or resolution of symptoms with therapy, 3) elevation of mast cell mediators above baseline during an episode (tryptase or urine histamine or prostaglandin), 4) systemic mastocytosis or monoclonal mcas (mmas) has been ruled out. Contact an doctor with specific expertise in mastocytosis for more info about these diagnoses.

Complex: First you must have an elevated baseline tryptase level along with symptoms. Then you will need a bone marrow biopsy to determine what type of mast cell disorders you may have since they all behave the same way.
