Listening & Talking: Therapists treat patients after doing an evaluation of the presenting problems and agreeing on a treatment plan with the patient. Though the specific techniques vary somewhat, depending on theoretical orientation, the treatment typically consists of oral discussion with the patient. Through such discussions ("talk therapy") patients gain awareness, learn new skills, and learn to function better.
