Resistance: To the flow of air through a tube is inversely proportional to the 4th power of its radius. As such, changes in caliber can have a dramatic impact on air movement in either direction. This is why kids with asthma, whose bronchioles have thickened walls from inflammation, have so much difficulty moving air and why they flare their nostrils in an effort to compensate.
