Fidgety child: An eight year old should be able to maintain some ability to sit still for periods of time, especially at school, dinnertime, etc. If need for constant movement is starting to interfere with his daily living activiites (notes from teacher, coach, etc that he is too 'hyper' , then it is time for formal evaluation.Could be a number of things from an overactive thyroid to adhd to sleep problems, more.

It depends: Does he really move "all the time"? Will he sit in front of a tv show or other activity? Some children are kinetic learners- they need to move to listen! trying to make them stay still can be counterproductive. Giving them a socially acceptable way to move may help- wiggling toes inside shoes, getting up occasionally to move around. If it is interfering with learning, talk with your doctor.
