A member asked:

Can jaundice show up in the eyes only?

Sometimes first: Jaundice is the descriptive term for a yellowing of the body tissues due to liver illness in which the bilirubin metabolism is disturbed and collects in the body. As it is yellow, it stains tissue and sometimes the eye is the first noticed since the normal whites of the eyes turn yellowish. But if you see it there, it will not be long before the rest of the body changes. Liver evaluation needed.

No: Jaundice is often noticed when the sclerae (the white part of someone's eyes) are noted to be yellow. However, the skin also assumes a yellow cast in jaundice. Urine turns dark, and stools may become a light yellow color because bile (which gives stool its dark brown color) is blocked from entering the intestine. Yellow discoloration can also be seen under the tongue.
