Blood work&children: A child should have yearly blood tests to check for electrolytes and blood count. Some of them may have anemia and some childhood diabetes is diagnosed this way. This is usually a part of their annual physical.

AAP standards: The american academy of pediatrics recommends screening by questionnaire for risk on a regular basis.A hemoglobin and hematocrit is done at about a year and then whenever indicated by the screening.Electrolyte studies are not part of routine screening.
