Not mental illness: If you can cure your problem just by looking at things differently, then you probably don't have a mental illness. Conditions like major depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia can't be cured just with a change in attitude.

Disease: Medicalization of mental illness is a big debate still. It tends to be driven by pharmacy and marketing. That said, several mental health illnesses are clearly heritable and have a distinct 'disease' pattern. I work with many medically ill patients and psychotherapy to help people analyze patterns and learn new behaviors helps manage symptoms and traits works for them as well.

Migraines, TMJ: The mind and body are connected. Chronic pain, drug abuse, migraines, tmj, obestiy, infertility, erectile dysfxn, fibromyalgia, gulf war syndrome and HTN have been treated with some success w/ cognitive therapy or 'looking at things differently' in combo w/ other tx. Hypnosis has been used to treat warts, some rashes, allergies, asthma and irritable bowel syndrome.
