A member asked:

Turbinate hypertrophy not going away with allergy meds. what causes this? i've tried albuterol thinking it was asthma but that only made things worse.

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Nasal turbinates: Longstanding exposure to allergens/irritants (tobacco smoke, chemicals), the cells that line the nasal passages not only get inflamed but grow in size ( like a callus on hands). Otc allergy meds will not shrink hypertrophied turbinates. First line treatment- identify & avoid trigger(s) then consider nasal corticosteroids, which take 7-10 days to work. If no change, time to see ent.
