A break in the skin : Cellulitis is a superficial infection of the skin and subcut. Tissue. It is usually the result of a break in the skin that can be microscopic. This break can be caused by athletes foot or other skin conditions. The infected person is usually colonized with streptococcus or staphylococcus (including mrsa) which enters through the skin break and causes infection. Edema and lymphedema predispose.
