When does a female lactate?

After delivery: Usually a woman lactates within a few days after having given birth. However, leakage of milk can occur earlier in pregnancy, and outside pregnancy. If the latter happens, a physician needs to rule out a benign tumor in the mid-brain, a prolactinoma.
