Styes: If you have styes, then you likely have have underlying blepharitis (lid inflammation) which is causing your meibomian glands to become occluded and infected (like a pimple). Treatment is usually warm compresses for at least 12 minutes followed by lid massages with possible antibiotic/steroid combination eyedrop.

Bacteria: When your eyelashes become colonized with bacteria, the bacteria likes to go into the oil glands of your eyelids. The bacteria then causes a blockage of the gland and a chalazion starts to form. Washing your eyelashes daily with baby shampoo is 85% effective of preventing recurrence of chalazia. Sometimes people need either topical or oral antibiotics to help. Decolonization is key.
