Dr. Robert Vogt Lowell

Relaxes vasc muscle: Angiotensin i is a hormone that is converted to angiotensin ii with the help of the angiotensin converting enzyme (ace). Angiotensin ii is a very powerful constrictor of vascular muscle and in doing so increases the pressure inside the vessels (the blood pressure). If you inhibit (or neutralize) the ace then you don't produce as much angiotensin ii and the BP does not increase.

A 82-year-old member asked:

Why might an arb be more effective in stabilizing blood pressure than an ACE inhibitor?

2 doctor answers9 doctors weighed in
Dr. Harris Cohen
Family Medicine 21 years experience
ARB vs. ACE: Different people respond to blood pressure medications differently -- so in some people, an arb may be more potent than an ace, and in others vice versa. These medications work at different parts of the renin-angiotensin pathway.
A 34-year-old member asked:

What are the differences between enalapril 20 and losartan 50?

1 doctor answer4 doctors weighed in
Dr. Rick Koch
Cardiology 22 years experience
Acei vs arb: Enalapril is an angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor and losarten is an angiotensin receptor blocker. Both work at the kidney level to control blood pressure and reduced proteinuria. Acei can have a side effect of cough while arbs do not.
