Not all patients....: With sickle cell disease are lean, but most are. There are several reasons, and many things we don't know. First, the half life of sickle red cells is much shorter than for normal rbcs. Thus pts must make red cells much more often, which requires energy. Also, caloric intake for sickle cell pts is less than required at quiescence and falls during crises and hospitalization. Many other factors 2.
