I am not sure.: May be your socks aren't warm enough. May be your socks, shoes or boots are too tight. May be you have a circulation problem.

Pathology: Most hospitals have a policy that the amputated tissues be sent to pathology for evaluation. In the setting of an infection, cultures may be taken. In the setting of other disease, tissues may be evaluated by the pathologist to look at the blood vessels, for example in buerger's disease. After being evaluated amputated limbs are disposed of as "medical waste" which is typically incinerated.

What does it mean when your feet are always cold?

Can be circulation.: This can be due to circulation difficulty, or it might be a symptom of hypothyroidism or vasculitis. There are vasospastic disorders, like raynaud's phenominon, that are triggered by cold exposure, with blanching, cyanosis, and redness, so the extremities must be kept warm. It would be a good idea to keep your feet warm anyway. It would be wise at this point to see your doctor and get tested.

Let pain guide you: If you twisted your ankle and it has minimal pain and swelling, you just need to be ginger with it until the ligaments heal. If the pain is on a bone and not in the soft tissues below the ankle, it may require an xray. Your description of your injury is likely a sprain, not requiring an er visit. Rest, ice, compression. Elevation. Ibuprofen for good measure if painful.

Possibilities: If they are actually cold to touch, it could be due to a circulatory disorder. If they feel cold all the time but when you touch them with your hands and they are actually warm, then this can be a symptom of peripheral neuropathy. Either way, see physician to have this checked out.

Cold feet: The diagnosis is going to vary based on the age and associated conditions. It could be normal for many people, their body is just cold-natured. It could be from poor circulation from vascular occlusion or vasospasms from numerous causes. Low metabolic rate with low heart rate may also feel like having cold feet. Some medications can cause cold feet.
