A member asked:

Is annual exam at a naturopathic doctor the same as a medical doctor?

6 doctors weighed in across 4 answers

Mostly different: There is a significant difference in the basic philosophy of these two groups. Naturopaths think the body will heal itself if we would just get out of the way. Assistance in this is by good diet, and positive outlook. Their remedies are mostly unproven herbals with no clinical trials. Med doctors have intensive training in modern knowledge and are more likely to find any problems you have.

Generally No: Natyropathic doctors are generally not trained or experienced in performing a detailed physical exam, for any age patient without attending medical school and doing a medical residency.

No.: There are many differences between naturopaths and md's. Training, ability to order and interpret studies, level of evidence required to define practice, peer review, accountability . Etc. All of this influences the contents of the "annual physical." to see what is recommended for "annual physical" and periodic health maintenance visit the uspstf ( United States preventive services task force).

Yes: Depending on your state and scope of practice. (nd licensing is different in different states) an annual physical is the same. Those who say otherwise on healthtap have made up their mind without bothering with facts, or have an unstated agenda. Nd education includes the same medical science, the same diagnostic tools and training as conventional med, difference is in approach and treatment.
