Treat the cause.: Difficult coughs may be triggered by various causes: lung inflammation, wheezing, sinus drainage, and even reflux. The best way to cope with cough is to treat the actual cause: antibiotics for infxn, inhaled steroids, bronchodilators, or even anti-reflux medications. One or more of these may be needed to quell the cough--even better than traditional cough meds. Claritin (loratadine) is for allergy, not cough.
