Several things: The risk factors for development of varicose veins include heredity, lifestyle (working, standing long hours), pregnancy, aging, and obesity. Wearing compression hose will provide symptomatic relief but it will not prevent progression of the problem.

Heredity: Dr. Isobe is right, there are several things that can make your varicose veins get worse. Unfortunately, even if you do everything right (use compression stockings, don't stand too long, don't gain weight, etc.) your varicose veins will get worse anyway. If you inherit the tnedency to get varicose veins, you also inherit the tendency for your veins to get worse.

Prolonged standing : Heredity, prolonged standing, prolonged sitting, hormones, pregnancies, weight lifting, not using compression stockings, heat ( hot climates), inactivity, not using your calf muscle...Some say obesity but even skinny people have varicose veins.

Varicose Veins: Varicose veins are hereditary. Conditions that make then worse are pregnancies, especially multiple pregnancies, obesity or being overweight, lack of exercise, prolonged standing, hormonal factors, trauma, heavy weight lifting. If you are having significant problems, I would recommend that you seek a vascular surgeon for opinion regarding treatment. Compressoin stockings can help.
